About this recipe

I love an apple crumble. Served with hot custard, I think it’s truly one of the best British desserts — right up there alongside sticky toffee pudding, of course. There’s just something about that combination of warm, soft fruit and golden, crunchy topping that feels like a hug in dessert form. Whether it’s a Sunday roast finisher, a cozy autumn evening treat, or a quick bake to use up extra apples, apple crumble always delivers comfort in the simplest, most nostalgic way.

Now, a good crumble is super simple at its core — apples and crumble topping. But we don’t do simple here; we add pizzazz. A little twist that makes all the difference. Adding oats to the crumble mixture gives it an extra layer of crunch and texture, while a touch of milk helps everything clump together for that chunky, buttery crumble we all love. It’s the secret to getting those irresistible golden clusters that crisp up beautifully in the oven. But be careful: too much milk can make the topping heavy and prevent it from baking properly. Add it gradually, a spoonful at a time, until the mixture just starts to hold together — you may not need all of it.

This apple crumble recipe is one of the easiest, quickest, and most comforting desserts you can make. It’s timeless, reliable, and endlessly adaptable. The filling uses Bramley apples, known for their perfect tartness that balances the sweetness of the topping. I like to pair them with ripe, ready-to-eat pears for an extra depth of flavour — a little fruity twist that makes every bite more interesting. The apples soften into a luscious, jammy base while the pears add subtle floral notes that melt beautifully under the crumble.

When it comes to the topping, cold butter is key. Rub it into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs, then stir in the oats, brown sugar, and caster sugar. The brown sugar adds a rich caramel depth, while the caster sugar keeps things crisp. Once everything is mixed, drizzle in the milk bit by bit until the mixture starts forming lovely clumps. Scatter it generously over the fruit — don’t pack it down, just let it sit naturally so it bakes into an uneven, golden crown of crunchy goodness.

Bake until the top is crisp and golden, and the fruit underneath is bubbling at the edges. The smell alone will have everyone hovering around the oven. Serve it hot, straight out of the dish, with a generous pour of warm custard. The creamy custard seeps into the crumble, soaking the edges just enough while keeping the middle crunchy — pure bliss in every spoonful.

Whether you’re making it for Sunday dinner, a family gathering, or just a cozy night in, this apple crumble recipe never disappoints. It’s traditional, comforting, and utterly delicious — a British classic that deserves its place at the top of every dessert list.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the sliced apples, sliced pears, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is softened slightly, too cooked and it will be mushy in the oven this will take around about 5 minutes.
  3. Transfer the cooked fruit mixture into a baking dish, mine was around 4x4 inches ,spreading it out evenly.
  4. In another bowl, combine the plain flour, plain oats, brown sugar, and caster sugar for the crumble topping.
  5. Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs, if too dry add milk a tbsp at a time, I like large chunks but it's up to you how you want it! You can also use a pastry cutter for this.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit in the baking dish.
  7. Place in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, until the top is golden, and edges are bubbling in caramel fruity goodness. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
  8. Remove the crumble from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving.
  9. Serve your Apple and Pear Crumble warm, either on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
